There are quite a few really effective ways to clean a penny. Here's a quick list of effective non-toxic methods of cleaning a penny:

1. Eraser

Rub the penny with a standard pencil eraser. Either rub by hand, use an electric eraser or attach a short pencil to a standard variable-speed drill.  The dirt on the penny will slowly be stripped away, revealing a shiny new finish.

2. Toothpaste (Arm & Hammer, Aquafresh & regular Colgate or Crest work well) & a toothbrush

Smear a small blob of toothpaste ontoa dirty penny and then scrub it around on the penny with a wet toothbrush. Rinse under the tap occasionally to check the color, and repeat the scrubbing process until the penny is the color you want. Pat dry and voila! A clean penny!


3. Ketchup

Ketchup works well as a cleaner because it is acidic (it contains vinegar, salt and tomatoes). Use an old toothbrush to lightly scrub a little ketchup onto a dirty penny. Work the ketchup into all the tight areas. Rinse the penny under the tap. Now pour some baking soda into a small dish and add some water to make a thick paste. Rub the paste all over the penny with your fingers to bring back the shine.


4. Vinegar & Salt

The use of vinegar and salt to clean pennies (and copper pots!) works on the same principle as using ketchup, but there is less rubbing involved. Mix up a concoction of white vinegar and salt or apple cider and salt. Stir it around to dissolve the salt and then dump in your dirty pennies. Mix it up a bit and let it sit for several minutes. You will be able to see the cleaning process in action. Scrub lightly with a toothbrush to get the especially gritty areas. Rinse and spit. Bring back the shine with the baking soda mixture mentioned in the ketchup technique above.

5. Lemon Juice & Salt

Place your pennies into a shallow dish and cover them with lemon juice and salt. Wait a few minutes and rinse, with no rubbing required.

NOTE:  Leaving your pennies in a lemon & salt mixture for too long (like several hours)  will turn them black.

6. Hot Sauce
 

Use an old toothbrush to scrub your choice of hot sauce into you dirty penny (many fast food restaurants provide hot sauce in little packets). Rinse under a tap. Repeat until your desired color choice is achieved. If your penny turns dark from the hot sauce, use a pencil eraser to rub it shiny again.


7. Long Soak

Certain substances do a great job of cleaning even the dirtiest of pennies! Some are:

• Coke, Pepsi or generic cola
• Cranberry Juice
• Polident (for dentures)
• Epsom Salts
