Authenticity. If feels like something that’s somewhat elusive at times. I’ll scroll through social media, and find perfection at every corner. Perfect lighting, perfect filter, perfect family, perfect smiles, perfect business. And yet; we all know that’s not real. We live in this world too. And we know that life is filled with imperfections. Social Media is also filled with people who don’t SOUND authentic. Wanna know how I know? Because so many people have started to sound (and look) the same. In a world where no two people are quite alike, I keep reading profiles that all read the same. There’s nothing authentic about that!
Why I Can’t Get It Off My Mind
Since I keep encountering ‘sameness’ on the platforms that have become a big part of our lives, “authenticity” has begun to burn on my mind. As humans, we thrive on relationship, and a real relationship always revolves around authenticity. The reality is: you don’t want to be around a fake person. You can sense in-authenticity. And it gives you an ick.
Isn’t it funny that we then turn around and strive to portray that we’re something that we’re not? Likely, we don’t even recognize it in ourselves. Why? Because we’ve been fed a message our whole lives that it’s important to appear: put together, successful, and desirable. We want to be liked, and to be liked, we unconsciously believe that we have to be what the other person is looking for.
It’s Okay to Be You
It’s time to stop believing that you need to be someone else. What people want from you is YOU. We are all made unique for a reason. Our unique selves is our gift to others!
What does being your ‘authentic you’ look like? Are you serious, or crazy silly? Do you love details or are you all about the big picture? Are you clean and tidy, or cluttered and dirty? Do you love the colour purple, and wear it everyday, and splash it throughout your life, or are you all about black? Whatever it is, let people see it. Open up that box you’ve kept closed, and show it to the world, so people can see the real you. Don’t worry about what others are doing. Just worry about what YOU are doing.
I challenge you today to reflect on how you may be unconsciously portraying yourself that may not be 100% ‘YOU’, and ask: what can you show people today that is 100% uniquely YOU? Today is a good day to start being just like…yourself.
