Problem: the aim of little boys isn’t great. This creates an extra dirty, and smelly, toilet. I hear a lot of complaints of smelly toilets, that include the statement, “I’ve tried everything, and nothing makes the smell go away.” The 4 toilet cleaning hacks I’m going to share today are:
- Actually effective
- Don’t use harsh chemicals
Let’s get started on some deep toilet cleaning hacks that you can do a few times a year (or more) to keep those smells at bay!
These hacks are the deep clean your toilet needs!
The tools needed:
- Norwex Bathroom Cleaner
- Norwex EnviroCloth
- Old Toothbrush
Optional: Norwex Descaler or Norwex Cleaning Paste, and a disposable sponge
Tip 1: Clean the outside of the bowl
Invisible drips are on the outside of the toilet bowl. Cleaning those off will help eliminate odors. Here’s an example, thanks to the use of a blacklight, of what the outside of a toilet bowl can look like before it’s been wiped off, compared to what it looks like after it’s been wiped off. Note that this photo demonstrates what the toilet bowl looked like after it had been cleaned with just water and an EnviroCloth {photo credit: unknown}
So yeah, wipe the outside of the bowl and you’ll find a dramatic reduction in odors! Densely woven, superfine Norwex Microfiber physically removes up to 99% of bacteria from a surface using only water when following proper care and use instructions. You’re going to find it’s the most effective way (and fastest way) to clean your toilet!
Tip Two: Clean the crevices.
Since aim isn’t great, urine is just going to get in the crevices of the toilet seat. You have to remove the build-up that’s in there, if you want to get rid of bad smells. Here’s what you do:
- Grab an old toothbrush
- Get it wet
- Put a drop of Norwex Bathroom Cleaner on the bristles
- Use the toothbrush to scrub all of the little crevices
This includes UNDER any caps that are covering the seat screws! Open them up and thoroughly scrub them down. Use your damp EnviroCloth to wipe everything away.
If you have had your toilet a long time, and have never done a good deep clean, you could even go so far as to completely unscrew the toilet seat, and give it a good scrubbing down in the laundry tub, to better reach the crevices.
The Bathroom Cleaner is a great product for this job because it’s effective at breaking down build-up on the toilet. It’s also not a harsh cleaner, so it’s safer for you and your family.
Features you’ll love about the Bathroom Cleaner:
Descaling: To clean, it uses organic salts rather than strong corrosive acids to “eat” and remove hard water build-up such as rust, calcium, and limescale, as well as urine salts.
Natural Chelating ingredients: The non-toxic citric acid in this cleaner makes hard water softer. By reducing the hardness of the water with a chelating agent, the other detergent ingredients (surfactants) are better able to clean, and you only have to use a small amount.
Does NOT contain:
- APE (alkylphenol ethoxylates) which mimics estrogen and has reproductive effects on aquatic organisms.
- Phosphates
- Corrosive fumes or dangerous hydrochloric or phosphoric acid.
- Artificial Fragrance
Tip Three: Clean the floor around the toilet
Yup. Drips even get there! And if you have a persistent pee smell, you want to get rid of build up on the floor, as well. Use a damp EnviroCloth to wipe the floor in front, beside, and even close to behind the toilet.
Now, grab that toothbrush again! You’ll want to use it, with some Bathroom Cleaner, to scrub the crevice between the toilet and the floor, to loosen any pee that seeped under the edge there. You can throw the toothbrush away after this point. And launder your EnviroCloth.
Wiping the floor should be a part of your regular toilet cleaning routine. The build-up on the floor can be the biggest contributor to urine odors, and regular wipe ups will help keep it at bay.
One customer shared with me that she had tried *all the things* to get rid of the urine smell that emanated from her toilet. None of the chemical cleaners she tried did the trick (including bleach). However, once she got her hands on her first EnviroCloth, she wiped the floor around the toilet with it. The smell. was. gone. Now, wiping down the floor with her EnviroCloth is part of her regular cleaning routine!
Tip Four: Deep Clean inside the bowl
To typically clean the inside of your toilet bowl, you’ll add a small squirt of Bathroom Cleaner to the bowl, and swish it around with the Toilet Brush. Sometimes, that’s not quite enough to get the bowl REALLY clean. If the bowl is smelling like pee, here’s how I deep clean mine:
Option 1: spray under the rim of the toilet with Descaler. Let sit for 15-20 minutes. Rub under the rim with an EnviroCloth or a disposable sponge. Flush toilet when done.
Option 2: Grab Cleaning Paste and an abrasive, disposable sponge. Get the sponge damp, then rub it in your Cleaning Paste to transfer the product to the sponge. Then, scrub under the rim of the toilet bowl to loosen built up urine deposits. Flush the toilet when done.
