So, you tried switching to natural deodorant and… it didn’t work. You gave it a few days, decided you smelled worse than a locker room, and went right back to your trusty antiperspirant.
I hear this all the time. And I get it! No one wants to stink.
But here’s the thing: while antiperspirants might keep you dry, they’re not necessarily the healthiest choice. Making the switch to natural deodorant is worth it. But there is a process to do it right.
Let me walk you through it:
- Why the switch is a smart move
- What to expect during the transition
- Tips for making it easier
- And the natural deodorants I recommend
Why Make the Switch from Antiperspirant?
Here are a few reasons many people are moving away from traditional antiperspirants:
1. You Need to Sweat
Antiperspirants stop you from sweating. But sweating is how your body naturally detoxes. Natural deodorants let your body sweat (because it’s supposed to!) while helping keep odor at bay.
2. Mystery “Fragrance” Ingredients
If your deodorant lists “fragrance,” you have no idea what’s actually in it. “Fragrance” is a blanket term that can include hundreds of chemicals—many of which haven’t been tested for long-term safety. {Insert link: Does “Clean” Have a Smell? • Dangers of Fragrance}
3. Phthalates = Hormone Disruptors
Phthalates help fragrances last longer and make application smoother, but they’re known endocrine disruptors. Linked to hormonal imbalance and even birth defects, phthalates are something most of us would rather avoid.
4. Aluminum Concerns
Aluminum is the active ingredient in most antiperspirants. While research is ongoing, some studies suggest possible links to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, and hormonal disruption. Many people choose to avoid it as a precaution.
Why Switching to a Natural Deodorant Can Feel So Hard
Here’s what usually happens:
Someone wants to go natural, so they grab a deodorant and give it a shot. After a few days of feeling sticky and smelling not great, they call it quits and say, “Natural deodorant just doesn’t work for me.”
But here’s the deal: your body needs time to detox from antiperspirants. It’s been used to having its sweat glands blocked. When you suddenly stop doing that, your body goes into overdrive, creating more sweat and therefore, more odor.
Is it fun? Nope.
Is it worth it? Absolutely.
The detox period typically lasts 2–4 weeks (sorry!), but once your body adjusts, natural deodorant can absolutely work, and work well, I pinky swear.
Tips to Survive the Detox (Without Offending Everyone Around You)
1. Move Your Body
Exercise helps you sweat out toxins faster. The more you move, the quicker your body can adjust.
2. Hydrate Like a Boss
Drink plenty of water to help flush toxins and reduce odor from the inside out.
3. Reapply if Needed
During detox, it’s totally normal to reapply deodorant during the day. Keep it in your bag. It’s only a temporary step.
4. Take Hot Baths
Sweating it out in the tub is another way to help speed the detox process (and hey, relax you too).
5. Use Powder for Comfort
Apply a little arrowroot powder or cornstarch after your deodorant. It helps absorb moisture and reduces that uncomfortable damp feeling antiperspirants used to block.
6. Start the Switch in the Cooler Months
Getting used to sweating is way better in cooler weather than in mid-summer!
Now, if you’re reading this during or just before a hot summer month, I don’t want this one suggestion to prevent you from starting on your natural deodorant journey right away; by all means, start the detox! However, if you’re reading this in the cooler months (autumn, winter, or spring), I highly recommend starting the switch as soon as possible so that when summer arrives, detox is done and you’re used to your new underarm normal.
Tips for Using Natural Deodorant
✔ A little goes a long way
Natural deodorants don’t have fillers, so you only need a thin layer. Using too much can lead to irritation and buildup on your clothes.
✔ If you’re irritated, check for baking soda
Some people are sensitive to baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate). If your skin is red, itchy, or bumpy, try a baking soda-free formula.
✔ Don’t apply right after shaving
Wait about 10–15 minutes post-shave to apply deodorant. It reduces the chance of irritation.
My Top Deodorant Recommendations
There are lots of great options out there, but I personally love what Norwex offers. Here are two totally different types to choose from:
Prebiotic Deodorant
This Norwex full-body deodorant (not just for pits!) is powered by prebiotics and charcoal and delivers long-lasting freshness. It works with your skin’s microbiome, helping “good” bacteria flourish while preventing the growth of odor-causing “bad” bacteria in sweat. It absorbs moisture and neutralizes odor while helping maintain your skin’s natural pH.
I also love this deodorant because it’s refillable, thoughtfully designed to help reduce waste and save you money!
(Norwex occasionally releases limited-edition scents too—subscribe to my newsletter so you don’t miss them!)

Deodorant Crystal
This is a solid mineral rock that you dampen and rub directly onto your underarms. It’s odorless, super long-lasting, and a great minimalist option. Economical and effective.

Bottom Line
Switching to natural deodorant isn’t just about avoiding chemicals—it’s about giving your body the chance to function the way it’s meant to. Yes, there’s an adjustment period, but with the right mindset (and some backup deodorant in your bag), you’ll get through it!
You’ve got this 💪. And if you need help choosing the right product for you, I’m just a message away.
